<body>This picturesque area to the north of Launceston has vineyards on both sides of the river, with the majority on the western bank. While most sites look on to the water, a number are further inland, including a group at Relbia, just south of Launceston. The Tamar Valley produced over 2,000 tonnes of grapes in 2006, about 38% of the state&#8217;s total crush, from 58 vineyards. Traditional cool climate varieties flourish here, with pinot noir, chardonnay, riesling, and the fashionable sauvignon blanc and pinot gris dominant. Proximity to the river lessens the risk of frost and has some effect on heat summation, as the Tamar Valley fruit, particularly pinot noir, generally ripens well.

The Tamar Valley is becoming increasingly popular as a tourist destination for wine lovers, both local and tourists, and many vineyards have their own tasting facilities. Driving from Launceston to Tamar Ridge, probably the furthest vineyard from the city, takes about 45 minues, so it is possible to visit a number in a half or full day.
