<body>Once synonymous with apples, apricots and pears, the area south of Hobart is home to a growing number of vineyards. A very marginal climate means some varieties don&#8217;t always ripen, but when they do the long growing season can produce wonderful cool climate fruit. Home Hill, Elsewhere, and Panorama have all produced outstanding pinot noir in favourable years. Hartzview near Cygnet also produces fruit wines from cherries, blackberries, and blackcurrants, as well as an apple mead and conventional grape wines.

Rainfall in the Huon and Channel area is around 75 centimetres per year, making it one of the wetter parts of the state. However, the hilly nature of the area means drainage is rarely a problem. The great natural beauty of the Huon and Channel brings increasing numbers of tourists to the area, and wine tourism is developing steadily. Over 120 tonnes of fruit were picked in 2006 from 39 vineyards, indicating the small average size of plantings.
