<body>This is probably the warmest area with summer temperatures often a degree or two hotter than elsewhere in the state. Rainfall is low and the last 25 years have seen a steady decrease in yearly totals. While there is only about twenty vineyards in the area, Tamar Ridge Estate, the largest wine company in the state by far, has recently purchased the Coombend Vineyard and is increasing plantings. The east coast produced about 340 tonnes of fruit in 2006 from a total of just 57 hectares.

Some wonderful pinot noir has been produced on the east coast, notably from Apsley Gorge, Freycinet, Craigieknowe and Spring Vale Vineyards. Other classic varieties also grow well, and some of the state&#8217;s best cabernet sauvignon can be found here, benefitting from the warmer climate. Sauvignon blanc and pinot gris plantings are increasing as these varieties become more popular.
