Frosts can cause havoc with the emerging fruit in the inland areas, and in some seasons much of the vintage has been lost in one cold night. In 2006 about 335 tonnes of fruit was produced from twenty-two vineyards. Moorilla Estate at Berriedale, one of the outlying suburbs of the greater Hobart area, was planted in the late 1950s by Claudio Alcorso, and was one of the first two vineyards developed in the industry’s renaissance. A number of other vineyards have been planted along the western bank of the Derwent, often at some altitude and distance from the water. These higher plantings benefit from the full sweep of the sun and less risk of frost damage thanks to their proximity to the water.
