<body>This area is a few kilometres east and north-east of Hobart and encompasses the actual valley as well as the Cambridge, Sorell and Tea Tree areas. Over seventy vineyards have been planted here on a total area of almost 300 hectares, but the majority are less than 5 hectares. Already producing about 20% of the state&#8217;s crush, the Coal River Valley is perhaps the fastest growing sub-region. With its proximity to Hobart it&#8217;s not surprising that many vineyards are open for tastings, and several have restaurants.

One of the first vineyards in the area was planted by George Park at Stoney Vineyard, just a kilometre from Campania, and some legendary wines were produced from his tiny plot just over an acre in size. Domaine A vineyard is now on this site, producing excellent pinot and cabernet from much greater plantings, and others have followed all over the district. Pinot noir is by far the most popular variety, although all other classic varieties are represented. Apart from fruit quality, the presence of two contract winemaking facilities in the area has added to the attractiveness of the Coal River Valley for investment in viticulture.
