FOR YOUR DIARY

The Tasmanian Wine Centre is pleased to announce the visit of the patriarch of d’Arenberg Wines, d’Arry Osborn. d’Arry will be conducting a series of functions and tastings throughout Tasmania in Burnie, Launceston and Hobart. The Tasmanian Wine Centre will also be hosting a tasting in our store to celebrate the d’Arenberg range and the release of the 2008 vintages of the premium Icon range which includes the 2008 The Dead Arm Shiraz, 2008 The Coppermine Road Cabernet Sauvignon and 2008 The Ironstone Pressings Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre.

d’Arry Osborn has just completed his 69th consecutive vintage at d'Arenberg in McLaren Vale. In 2004 in recognition of his contribution to the wine industry and to the McLaren Vale region d’Arry was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia.

2008 The Ironstone Pressings Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre.

The wine takes its name from the decomposed laterite granite known as ironstone that is found across many of McLaren Vale’s wineries. The wine shows the serious side of Grenache, blended with the classic varietals of Shiraz and Mourvedre. Earthy complexity underpins ripe and spicy fruit with a savoury solid core.

Since the first vintage of this wine was released in 1987 it has won 6 trophies, 43 gold medals, 67 silver medals.

2008 The Dead Arm Shiraz

Dead Arm takes its name from a vine disease that randomly affects vines all over the world. One half (or arm) of the vine slowly dies to dead wood. The grapes on the other side display intensity of flavours due to the low yield. The Dead Arm Shiraz displays rich red fruit with plenty of spice, hidden oak and superb vibrant fruit tannin structure.

Since the first vintage of this wine was released in 1993, it has won 5 trophies, 53 gold medals, 83 silver medals

2008 The Coppermine Road Cabernet Sauvignon

Coppermine road runs parallel to d’Arenberg’s best Cabernet vineyard. This Cabernet vineyard yields low levels of juice due to the poor setting ability and small berry size. However the quality and intensity of the berries deliver a wine with real power and concentration with loud fruit, integrated oak and great cassis and leafy length.

Since the first vintage of this wine was released in 1995 it has won 4 trophies, 33 gold medals, 64 silver medals.

 TASMANIAN WINE FAIR EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS

Strahan Wine Fair

Some 40 people enjoyed a sumptuous meal at View 42 at Strahan in the evening to celebrate the conclusion of the Strahan Wine Fair.  Ten winemakers shared their wine, conversation and knowledge with guests throughout the evening.  The evening was punctuated with special wine prizes culminating in the drawing of the raffle which raised funds for the Royal Guide Dogs Tasmania.  Well done Strahan!

Launceston Wine Fair

Over 300 people enjoyed the Launceston Wine Fair in the Chancellor Room at the Hotel Grand Chancellor.  Some 250 wines were opened for tasting and 25 winemakers or winery principals were in attendance to talk about wine with the enthusiastic crowd.  The day was highlighted again with a very successful fund raising raffle to raise funds for Royal Guide Dogs Tasmania.

Hobart Wine Fair

The Hobart Wine Fair was held in the Atrium at the Henry Jones Art Hotel.  The rustic backdrop was appropriate for the winemakers and keen crowd that came along to support the Wine Fair.  Tasters were able to appease their palates and have lunch from one of the 3 restaurants that surround the atrium.  Tastings went from 12.00 noon to 5.00pm which was ample time for most attendees to sample the wines that they wished to try.

Such a successful Tasmanian Wine Fair has laid the foundation for another fair next year.  Dates and times will be published early next year so that you can diarise the events.
